As the 2009 BBC Radio 4 National Poetry Slam Champion, Ben Mellor is simply one of the UK’s most charismatic spoken word artists. Mellor’s poems pack an entertaining but thought provoking punch that transfixes audiences around the country.

Hailed by Latitude Festival as “one of the country’s biggest emerging talents”, Mellor is an award winning slam poet as well as a founder member of spoken word/hip hop collective Pen-ultimate.

“Presence and poise combined with linguistic and intellectual agility” (Patrick Neate, Book Slam).
“One of the UK’s most charismatic spoken word artists” (Phrased and Confused)

BarCode are stalwarts of the Brighton Hip Hop scene, Mad Hatter and Shrapnel have both been performing since their early teens. Individually their CV’s are as packed as rappers’ ten years their senior; between them their work has been featured on the BBC, ITV and Channel 4, as well as live in Brighton and as part of the Rising Styles hip hop festival. Widely respected for his beats, Mad Hatter has already won a Loopclash battle, and has impressed as one of Don’t Flop’s youngest rap battle winners as well as taking first place in the Hammer and Tongue Rap Slam 2009.

Shrapnel is a regular at the Slipjam B events and has raised energy levels at Poets Vs MCs and Hammer and Tongue, as well as being one of the most creative freestyle MCs you could ever hope to have in a cypher. In addition to this, he raps, plays keys and produces with his band Amandla Together they combine quality hip hop with an energy that puts most UK rap groups to shame.

OPEN SLAM

If you’re a Rapper or a Poet and fancy battling it out in the Open Slam, then step this way.

ABOUT RISING STYLES
This festival is developed and delivered by KALA PHOOL, one of the UKs leading arts development agencies. With particular focus on providing positive experiences for artists, audiences, funders, partners across all projects, Kala Phool’s work is highly respected. Kala Phool’s work has reached many territories including, Australia, USA, Singapore, India and across the UK.

RISING STYLES is the UK’s longest running Hip Hop Festival, its not for profit and run entirely by dedicated volunteers. It fundraises each year to meet the needs of the various events it delivers under the festival banner and attracts artists from across the UK and internationally.

Rising Styles achievements have only been made possible with the support of the artists who take part, the volunteers who work tirelessly to make it happen, the venues and sites who work with us, the funders who support us and to the audiences who come out each year to experience the positive side of hip hop and in particular, hip hop from the UK.

ABOUT HOOCHINOO
For over five years Hoochinoo has been showcasing, supporting and promoting new acts from the UK’s underground alternative hip hop and urban music scene. Giving people an opportunity to perform live in exciting environments has attracted a lot of attention from new artists and the establishment alike.

“Hoochinoo put on a fine night, helping to showcase unknown talent and bringing a new vibe to the capital’s musical landscape”.
~ UKhh.com

“Not your regular hip-hop night”
~ London Tourdates Magazine

The live event emphasises the alternative side of the music, incorporating everything from flute playing beatboxers to some of the best scratch DJs and live acts that perform within the UK. People get what they expect from a hip hop night but are also treated to something completely different, an all encompassing full on spectacle of live hip hop fusion.

Hoochinoo’s main aim is to push the music through barriers that have been created in the industry. We give artists who truly love hip hop and urban music the platform to perform and reach their potential audience.

The alternative perspective allows all forms of experimental hip hop to be included and leads to a very refreshing take on urban music, but the raw edge remains.

The fantasy world of dreams and nightmares was the theme for AudioActive and The School Creative Centre’s Rapdramatic 2010, an ambitious project that saw a team of 27 young people aged 13-24 take centre stage to write, compose, choreograph, film and produce a brand new musical show in just five days.

Director Christine Harmar-Brown worked with AudioActive’s Adam Joolia to bring together an impressive team of tutors to work alongside the young people, including rap impresario Jon Clake, celebrated film-maker Alice Ross, sound sensation Ollie Finn, street artist Luke Brabants, dancer and choreographer Makoto and top technical producer Taff.

The workshop drew participants from as far afield as Bexhill, Hastings, Rye, Battle, Robertsbridge and Ashford, all eager to try something new and take part in the unique production. One of them, Bryony Wakeford, said: “I didn’t really know what to expect, but it has been amazing, I have never done filming and editing before, and working with Alice [Ross] has been really fun. I am even having second thoughts about my career choices as I loved it so much!”

For budding young artist Nathan Fatola, street art was a novel experience. “I like drawing and stuff, but have never worked with spray cans,” he said. “It was really easy to learn things here because everyone is chilled. Luke [Brabants] really listens, and helped me get my ideas on to paper and then on to the flats for the stage. It’s great to see my work up there.”

Two regulars at The School, Carl Davey and Alice Yates, attend the rap and hip-hop sessions run by Jon Clarke and Ollie Finn on a Tuesday evening. For them, The Rapdramatic offered the chance to share their expertise. “Some people had never rapped before,” said Carl. “It can be a bit scary when you start, so it was good to see what they could do and help out. By the end, everyone was brilliant!”

For young rapper Temi Banwo from Ashford, The Rapdramatic offered a rare opportunity to work with professionals. “There is nothing like this going on locally where I live,” he said. “It has been amazing, and I can’t wait to come back and do the regular sessions with Jon. Working with a pro has been loads of fun.”

With so little time, the group had to work as a team if they were to pull off the production – learning to listen, contribute ideas and support each other. “We’ve all been working on the music for the rappers and the dancers, each of us bringing ideas and then developing them together,” said Elliot Lampitt. “Having access to such great equipment has really helped, and Ollie has given me lots of ideas about how I can develop my music. It has been awesome.”

The final production was performed in front of family and friends – and as the lights came up, the set depicted a nightmarish world where crazy cityscapes mixed with magical dream trees and freakish faces. The audience were mesmerised by the outstanding troupe of dancers and rappers, including some incredible freestyling from Richard Carzana and tutor Jon Clarke. All performed against a backdrop of surreal films created from specially shot footage and stock imagery, superbly edited to provide an additional dimension to the rappers’ performance, driven by the drum grooves, funky bass lines and live mixing from Ollie Finn and his enthusiastic team of musicians.

The performance received rapturous applause from the audience, one member commenting: “I was completely knocked out by how much they achieved. The projections and set were stunning, and the performers really professional. To produce something of this calibre in just five days was brilliant.”

The true measure of success was the fact that all the young people were unanimous in the view that the week had exceeded their expectations – and they couldn’t wait to come back and do more.

Cost: FREE before 10pm, £5 after

Our good friends, Man Make Music, are hosting an event next week that is gonna blow a hole in the roof of The Star of Bethnal Green in East London. Two of the UKs most sought after dance music makers will be the ones damaging the aforementioned roof! London’s own Wbeezer will be performing live with his fresh blend of Detroit style house, and fellow Londoner George FitzGerald will be DJing alongside Bruk and Man Make Music residents Sketchy and Another Amit.

Having been described as “one of the most exciting new artists to come out of the UK”, the young man Wbeezer has had heads turning at events like Secret Sundaze and also Sonar in Barcelona. With an EP release on the Third Ear Recordings label – the label who released Kyle Hall‘s ‘Must See EP’ – things are really starting to hot up for him. This is also likely to be one of the only intimate live sets from Wbeezer in London this summer – so don’t miss it!

And who better to have supporting Wbeezer than George FitzGerald?! An old friend of the Man Make Music crew and an artist signed to the well respected Hot Flush Recordings label, home to such luminaries as Mount Kimbie, Scuba, Distance, Boxcutter and Joy Orbison. His track, Painted Jezebel, was also present on the recent Brownswood Electr*c compilation from Gilles Peterson‘s Brownswood label.

This ultra-fresh blend of house, 2-step and dubstep stylings seems to be just what the UK scene needed – what with the recent triumphs from a diverse selection of producers, including; Floating Points, Joy Orbison, Mount Kimbie, Untold, Blue Daisy and Kyle Hall, to name a handful. These artists are pushing the boundaries of that ever-evolving beast; dance music. Transfered back into it’s rightful home, the club environment, not much comes close to it out in London venues right now. That slick blend of hypnotic melodies, driving beats and basslines ensures feet keep shuffling until the late, late hours become the early, early hours.

It can be a real task these days actually getting people to come out to shows in London, but this one is essentially FREE and is most definitely worth getting along to (especially with that late licence 4am finish). So, it’s a 100% fully endorsed Jus Like Music recommendation for the month of August – be there!
